I have a veritas mkII and I know that some people have problems with blade slipping but I'm certain its not moving. Problem is when adding the small secondary bevel it is larger at the corners than in the middle.

I wonder does this mean the stone is concave?

It could be but if the stone was concave it would have the same effect on the primary bevel. It might be the way you are holding it. Are you pressing down on the corners of the blade with your fingers? This could cause uneven honing even though the guide has a wide roller. Try putting pressure in the centre of the blade.

Cheers

I had thought about the primary bevel, but I wonderd if it might be the fact the two edges were so close that it was noticable on the secondary bevel and that it was probably on both.

Could be uneven pressure as I hold either side of the blade rather than jig. Not sure if I could actually bend the blade though  could I?

It's not about bending the blade. Uneven pressure can cause the blade and guide to tilt ever so slightly, which will give the effect you are getting. In fact, one of the recommended ways to get a slightly cambered blade is to put pressure on the sides of the blade, in turn, rather than the centre - but usually using a guide with a narrow roller, like the Eclipse. But it can happen with a wide roller, like you have on the Veritas.

remember that your fingers all exert different pressure, so it is easy to put an excess amount on one side or the other. the other thing are you standing behind the guide or to one side, that would change the pressure too.

you would be hard pushed to bend the blade in this circumstance. but otherwise you seem to have by accident found a way to put a camber on the blade without trying

Doesn't matter what it looks like as long as it is sharp and the edge reasonably straight.

cheers
Jacob

thanks for all the comments. I will take a good look at my stance and pressure as I sharpen and see what I can do.

Very true it seems sharp to me, I suppose I was just imagining amazingly straight and crisp edges with a honing guide. But I think you're right I am worrying too much!
