If we're doing folk, June Tabor

Prog rock: Camel ("Rain Dances")

Heavier: Phil Keaggy (album "220", but pretty much anything really)*.

Gentle jazz: Grover Washington Jr. ("Then & Now")

80s classic rock: Level 42.

I know, I'm really sad. But I don't care.

E.

*There's a story that Clapton was once asked if he could be another guitarist, who would he be. He answered P.K. Might be true - they've certainly played together.

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

Yep, he's a superb banjo player. That's the first time outside of a guitar forum that I've heard anyone mention him. :-D

I am a bass player and Victor is one of my favorite players.
And Howard Levy who is an amazing mouth organ player(who pretty much invented overblows).

I found these on YT just yesterday, at first I thought it would be a parody played for laughs but I think they are actually very good and there are some excellent polished performances.
No fixed lineup apart from the pianist who runs the outfit, Haley Reinhart is very good as an occasional lead singer but so are the others that feature:

Totally off tack and for no real reason that made me think of Eric Morcambe's answer on being asked what he and Ernie would have been had they not been comedians - Mike and Bernie Winters.

My fav group ever hence my user name currently learning a few MK bass lines 43 and Mr Pink

Hot summers in the 1970s, with Fluff on VHF on Saturday, playing Rain Dances...

We had a West region TV arts magazine caller "RPM" and I remember dubbing a feature on Mark King. There was some slow-mo of his right hand action. I was so demoralized afterwards I almost gave up bass! Wonderful stuff. He has his own brand of basses now, apparently.

Phil Keaggy:

(1st track on "220" but no video)

(John the Revelator - rubbish sound (album mix is much better) solo starts around 3'10" and 4'40" in)

(mucking about at a Gospel Music Association event in Nashville)

Semi-acoustic, quite different mood.

I've only heard him live once (I think he's only been to the UK once!). Drove from Bristol to Croydon to hear him play solo at a Sally Army hall. Absolutely packed (we sat on the steps of the balcony as it was full) captivated us for two hours - one guitar plus FX rack as tall as he is.

Hello,

Anyone interested in fine guitar playing, I bet the most under hyped, and possibly the finest around is.......Clive Carroll.

Bet no one has heard of him, but check him out. Virtuosity and beauty beyond belief.

Mike.

On the guitar-centric theme (slightly off topic),

As a guitar player (of no note whatsoever  ) for 40 years, thanks to Eric for Phil Keaggy, and to Woodbrains for Clive Carroll. Amazing. Never heard of either.

Not forgetting iNewbie's David Brent link which made me laugh (the *** is free?) :)

Suggestions for other enthusiasts, Al Di Meola - not unknown but not "popular", and "Rodrigo y Gabriela" - a couple who are amazing and still going strong - I saw them about ten years ago and their energy is incredible.

Cheers,

Andrew
