Experimental piece, turned from tinted Oak with an Ipe foot and collar, finial is made from an old chisel handle, I was intrigued how it would turn... very nicely but boy what a strange substance, a bit like really hard translucent rubber and the smell !!! Like chemical dog poo...

:)

You destroyed a perfectly good chisel just for the handle! You're on a very short list along with Sunnybob. I will find you.....

There was just something about that stinky old chisel, he had it coming...

Seriously, that chisel was a classic. They're wonderful tools, and that was perfectly revivable from the state it was in in the photo. If you've any more like that, send them to me, I'll sort them out and send them back again. You'll never destroy an old chisel again.

I have a set of those Marple Chisels, they must be 25+ years old and the handles still smell like vomit....but they keep a nice edge.

Lots of us have some of those excellent old Marples chisels with the yellow plastic handles and the nasty smell has had lots of discussion online. The simplest solution that I have read is to give them a coating of shellac, which sticks ok and stops the smell.

Hey hey hey, Mine isnt destroyed, oh no no no.

It might lean a bit, but still does "work" for me.
Finally, I've found someone to relieve me of being at the top of Mike's MOST WANTED list.

You're still here? Hmmm, there should have been a mystery "accident" an hour or so back. Now, where's Stavros' number....

They're clearly made for me! I have no sense of smell. Anyone who can't cope with the stink, drop me a PM.

There was a loud scream and a SNAP when one of the bear traps went off a while ago. I will check in the morning.

I have a set of the Marples which I bought about 40 years ago. Saw me through over 20 years site carpentry & boat fitting out. They are still in the shed and come out occasionally, but in the shed I mostly use a mallet on wooden handles chisels these days. I like the box though, nice job! I have been trying turning a bit.
