Hi there
I have been playing with idea of buying a Veritas Twin Screw vice. Are these any better than Irwin /record vice?
I think the later could do the same job with out price tag.

Or is it just about the size of clamp jaws? Definitely the twin screw can be up to 18 inches.

I also bought this extension from Fine-tools.com as they dont sell it in the UK (so far as i’m aware...

So my twin screw now has a capacity of 600mm, and i cant recommend it enough! The extra capacity comes in handy more often than i realised, and it works brilliantly. No racking of the vice to worry about, plenty of clamping force. I’ve got a thick board of quarter sawn ash for my jaws and i’ve lined it with adhesive backed cork which works great. I know these are expensive (cost a lot more than all of the material used for making my bench!) but i’ve personally found it well worth the investment!

I bought the main twin screw from the UK, but ordered the extension from Fine-Tools, which is from Germany as not for sale in UK, but that arrived fairly quick. I find that the cheapest Veritas stuff in the UK tends to be on canadiantools.co.uk, so check the prices on there if you were going to go for it.

What kind of work do you intend to do Smalmaleki and what type of bench will it be fitted to? That information is likely to impact what vice would be better for your use. I’ve got Record vices on my bench and have never once thought that twin screw (or any other type of vice for that matter) was necessary but then again, all my work tends to be rectilinear furniture type projects. I’m yet to attempt curvy work, luthiery or chairs etc. which might be helped with a vice like the one you are enquiring about.

I fitted one several years ago after i moved my workshop into my garage with direct access from the house , the down side was that I had to fit a shorter bench at 72" long (previous bench was closer to 8 feet in length).
I found that the original front fitted twin screw vice was a bit of a pain as it got in the way of working aside of my shorter bench.
So i refitted it on the end of the bench where i have found it to be ideally located, if i need to clamp along the length of the bench I can clamp to the bench apron.

I’m building my own workbench based on Mr Sellers workbench. A larger clamping capacity will make it easier when it comes to planing side of a long strip for joining.
I think a good vice is very critical for keeping the piece steady for hand cutting or planing.
Currently I only use hand clamps my unfinished workbench top. I am after a steady vice.

Hi mate
Just a silly question. What’s the diameter of the lead screws? Is it 38 mm as they advice on front jaw screw holes? :?:
