I think I have turned it wrong. It same with 3 equal large sized bushings and 2 small bushings. I assumed it was to be flush with the three large bushings. So I'm going to have to reduce the lower section. I think

Why don't they include instructions?

Hi
on the lower end of the cap you have to turn down to the bushing then sand and polish, then cut off 1/8" of the wood down to the brass tube then the lowe fitting will be a push fit on to the tube.

Yep thanks I found that after my last post.

I went back out to turn another pen but sadly all has not gone well.

This was supposed to be a small present for the missus-to-be (tomorrow). All a bit last minute but I'd ordered a spare blank and kit in case of error. The first one turned well but I damaged the kit trying to disassemble it (not having instructions).

So I went on to turn the next one after finding the above instructions. Everything went well except the Ebony cracked :( Not sure why.

I'm a bit upset with TR for not including instructions or at least having them on their site. All very confusing for the beginner. I guess they want you to buy their books or DVDs on the subject.

Anyway here's the finished article.

The camera doesn't pick up the crack, it's just above the tip. It's tiny so I'll get away with giving it to her and will tell her after and replace it.

It's finished with Osmo Poly X which gave a rather matt finish. I thought about trying CA but lost me bottle.

Oh well. It's all learning.

Good looking pen Tom, I am sure she will love it even with the crack.

One of the problems with ebony for pens is that it is very liable to cracking.

TR do the instructions but you have to ask for them and they will send them free of charge.

tom, that is a fine looking pen you done.i am sure she will love it.
the reason that ebonyand snakewood crack is that the wood is so dense and heavy. the only way you may,, yes may get roud the problem of cracking is drill slow a bit at a time cos the heat created from drilling makes the resins very hot. then when it cools down guess what,,,

yes it cracks

hope this helps

yeh cheers. I did go very slow with the drilling as I had a split on me last time I did it. Oh well. I'd like to make another one in ebony with more of a gloss finish. Will see if she wants it replaced when I give it to her.

tom, i forgot to say,,, i hope everything goes great and have a great day. best wishes, and all the best. congratulations
