I have been "commissioned" by by son-in-law to make some boxes for his toy soldier collection - he is into War Gaming (Battle of Waterloo).

Here's a couple of them WIP - still have to insert mock finger joints and separate top. And of course sand and finish!
Resawn from some old sapele 7/8" thick shelving I was given.

Few mistakes -
1 cutting slots before mitring corners
2 should have cut mitres on my table saw instead of shooting board - but new Donkey's Ear worked fine

Any excuse to get that 'ooh I just happened to leave my purrrdy marking knife nearby' moment in shot - seriously, how many 'takes' did you run through? (more than 3 huh, I thought so) - anyways; you suck.

ps. boxes look alright.

Rob for family rates read free!!

Newt the "Ear" worked really well especially on the sapele which finished up about 11mm thick after re sawing and planing. I stupidly cut all the pieces and squared them up (I was originally thinking of doing some secret mitred dovetails - but realised that was a bit too special for these boxes and the sides were quite thin?) Which meant I could not use the T/S for the mitres without major tear out! - hence they were cut on the shooting board and on the ones where I cut the slots I had problems with cutting the mitres on the shooting board with tear out at the slots - this was solved by initially cutting them on the bandsaw to cut below the slot.
You live and learn :)

The dimensions were quite tight as I made them from some old shelves which had housing slots cut into them. I managed to get 3 widths out of each section but could no afford to line the interior - hence I am attempting to rebate the top lid joint - 2 opposite housings and one cut through - if all works out? (see the piece under the knife)

They look nice. I have to make some of these up soon (for warhammer figures). Do you have any pictures of the insides?

I was going to partition them, but s-in-law has now decided he wants to insert small plastic trays inside?
The mock finger joints went well after making up a corner cutting jig - I used ebony for one and sycamore on the other (so they can be identified easier).
But separating the lid did not go as well as I hoped! :(
The first one I used my table saw having done a trial run on a scrap piece of timber - but I got some tear out on the sapele!
So for the second one I tried my bandsaw but I missed the point between the rebates - I had been trying to create a rebate joint using two opposite cuts.
Tomorrow I will be digging out my old Record 043 for some tricky planing to try to reinstate the rebates?

I think for the others I make, it will be a straight cut across with a finer blade and some upstanding liners in the bottom section to locate the lid?

The hot weather did not help too!

Here's the two "finished" with Osmo - the client (my son-in-law) could not wait for any hinges or knobs! And very hurried photo:

Not in the same league as Rob's but good enough for toy soldiers?
