My nature and behaviour of wood class put a perspective on this.

Trees dont have bums, so to get rid of their waste its stored on the inside. Hence toxicity of heartwood.

I'd say the vast majority of a tree's waste products are removed as oxygen and excess water through leaf stomata. Almost everything else kept within the tree almost certainly has a useful role for the tree, such as maintaining and nourishing its structure, cells for growth, food storage, and chemicals that probably have many roles, including the ability to transmit information of one sort or another within the tree and even to other trees, chemical maintenance of the tree's structure against hostile environmental conditions as well as destructive creatures, insects, and other plants.
