I've got a Record 080 scaper plane with a toothed blade with V shaped teeth:

which I was going use to reduce some 3mm thick fiddleback maple to 1mm, only because I thought it would be quicker to use a toothed scraper followed by a normal plane then a final scrape. But I was told a toothing blade (eg when used in a block plane) should have teeth that are shaped like a row of tiny chisels, each tooth should be sort of like a U but with a flat cutting edge.

But then on the forum I saw some new toothed plane blades which have V shaped teeth. Do the teeth shape make any difference?

Even though I have a toothed blade I hardly ever use it for figured Maple. It's just much more efficient to use a normal blade but Plane in the direction of the figure. On wide boards that is possible, not so easy on stuff that is thin/narrow.
Sorry but I can't answer your question regarding tooth shape.

That toothed blade looks like it was 'donated' by a dead saw.

I'd say give it a try on a piece of scrap, and see how it goes.
