Hi Everyone,

I have a 9 x 4 metre room that I have just started converting. About 1/3rd of it will be for finishing, 1/3rd for bench work and the final 1/3rd to display whatever I make and for a desk/computer/music area. It will be a virtually dust free room (no machines). For storage I wondered if anyone had any pictures of innovative, different or just very nice storage solutions that I could play around with.

Cheers, Froggy.

Thanks for that Stanley. I haven't bought any books as I can come up with a lot of ideas myself (it's not my first workshop fit) but before I get started I was just looking for a bit of inspiration. Quite often on here someone has something very different, very special hidden away and I was just hoping for something out of the ordinary to inspire my design.

Do you like the idea of having the tools mostly on display where everything can also be easily taken down for use? There's loads you can do in the line of tool boards and other wall-mounted options. And designing and making the various holders for different tools makes for great mini projects.

Obviously one step up from this is the tool cupboard, which can be wall mounted or a freestanding unit. Loads more work, but much more impressive if you're after some wow-factor.

have a look on Pinterest andd google for "Chech art nuveau display cabinets", you'll find some pretty inspirational stuff there. hth

I really like the travelling wardrobe style cupboards. with the leather straps and brass fittings they always look interesting and engaging.
I keep meaning to build a small rosewood chest with leather straps and brass fittings, quilted suede interior lining etc the mind wanders
I think most things can be made so much more special and interesting by being executed really well and with high quality details.
I don't know about you but i'm often disappointed when I see something that looks stunning from a distance and then up close you see all the flaws that someone hasn't bothered to finish off properly or do well.
I think if you're going down the posh workshop route then id probably use kitchen carcasses for storage and keep it all looking sleek, then add in free standing luxury storage like a post tool cupboard with interior lighting a suede lining for extra interest and wow factor.

Hi Guys thanks for your replies. I did make this a year or two ago

and I may do something similar but looking for other ideas to go with it. I will follow up and your leads, thanks. I'll also do a wip, might give someone else ideas.

Very neat job Froggy. I like the left door especially, I like it when the tools are very compactly stored.

I doubt it will be dust free. My workshop is split into a bench room and a machine room, but it's surprising how much dust gets created even with handtools. And the moment you begin sanding by hand you create more fine dust than any properly extracted machine.

I like the French cleat system, mainly because it is so flexible and you can change your tool layout as your needs or ideas change. And since you can hang shelves, cupboards or inboards on them it does not exclude the other methods.

Thanks ED65, there's a bit more in there since I took the photo.

Custard I won't be doing any sanding in there (even by hand), I have another room for that. But I appreciate it won't be completely dust free even if I did nothing! But hopefully it will be as dust free as our living room!

MusicMan I like the French cleat system too. I have used it in my existing workshop and will use it again in this room.
