Just got back from a trip to the US.

While there I got a Veritas Apron Plane with the A2 iron from Lee Valley, delivered to an address in the US, for $89 (approx. £50)

The same thing from Axminster is listed at £105!!

So lets see.

Veritas Apron plane at $89 or £50.

That means that Veritas must be selling the plane at around £22 to £25 pounds to their distributors so that the distrubutor can have a profit.

So lets assume that the FOB price at the factory gate is £25 ( for ease) then there is about 4% for transport costs across the pond. So £25 + 4% = £26.

Then import taxes 3.5% so thats £26 +3.5% lets round that up to £27.

Then UK transport say 4% so thats about £28 ( I can't be fussed to get the calulator out)./

Now borrowing money caost a bit so lets say that the warehouse costs and loaned money adds another £3 per item so its now £31.

So how does it get to £105. How do we get to understand the gap between £31 and £105.

regards

Alan

You might find it cheaper to order direct rather than pay Axminster prices even if you have to pay custom charges. Lee Valley shipments from Canada are extremely fast in my experience

Rutlands are still selling Veritas at the old prices...

If LV would sell at that price to their distirbutors, there would be at least one, who would sell this plane for 60 GBP.

Thanks for that.

At the moment it's easier, and cheaper, for me to order stuff for delivery to my US office and then pick it up next time I visit, obviously taking care not to exceed the UK customs limit!!
