I've made a little table, the sort of thing for putting a cup of coffee on beside a chair. This is my first venture into 'furniture' type work. Its made from spalted sycamore(surprise surprise, I'm trying to use up loads of it before it goes too far, not that I mind its lovely looking stuff.).
The 'chunky' design is to match other furniture we own.Its just short of 15" tall, the top is 9 1/2" wide and the base 9" wide. I tried to make the leg look like a queen chess piece(loosely without looking at pictures  ). All parts are finished with a hard wax.To my shame I've glued the three pieces together with 'instant nails' mainly because I've got half a tube kicking around  still shouldn't fall apart

Your comments/criticisms greatly appreciated.

Cheers JT

Thats nice - is it from the plans blister had ? (see the "make it and pass it on " thread)

Well Johnny,

I hope you have turned a matching coaster, because i wouldn't want hot coffee on that beautiful timber !

Very Nice

That is very dramatic. Unusual to see something like that mad in that type of wood. Could you get a piece of glass or perspex cut for the top to protect it perhaps?

Pete

Thanks for replies thus far :D

BSM no its not from Blisters plans its from my head

Pete I would of had to make a recess for glass but that would have been good.

Hi Johnny,

Looks good mate. My first response was that it is a little chunky but if that is by design then it's chunky-ness can not be criticised. I can certainly see the queen chess piece in it.

Good job, well done!

Richard

Johnny, Once again you've come up trumps !
Magic !
You continue to impress with how quickly you seem to be getting better and better ... and the Spalted Sycamore has been a great 'find' ... you've an excellent selection of pieces from your 'stash' already, and this latest one enhances that even further.

Well done once again. :D :D :D

Very nice :D
I like the "chunky" look, and the chess queen idea works well.
As for your huge pile of (rather beautiful) sycamore, where and how is it stored ?
Spalting stops as the timber dries and the moisture content drops,so if it's drying nicely somewhere, there's no reason why much of it should go too soft to be useable.

Top dollar Johnny, chunky gets me all the time.
keep then coming lovely wood and very well turned by all accounts.

Thanks :D

Jenx, I'm only getting better through having loads of turning time due to having sod all work comming in thanks to this 'fun' recession

Some is in my little wood store I built on the side of my shed, some outside and some I've processed into cylanders slices etc which are laying around in the shed drying. The larger bits have a lot of moisture in the spalted centre and are quite soft in places, still i'm happy working my way through it and am getting a nice little stock of items turned from it :D .

Hi Johnny,
Sorry to hear that the recession is affecting you like this, but at least it is giving you more turning time.
I really like this piece. Lovely looking wood turned simply at top and bottom so as not to detract from the beauty of the wood, with a more intricate leg that certainly resembles a chess piece IMHO.
Congratulations on your first foray into furniture.

Will this one be for SWMBO,and the King one will be yours :?: :D

  It was to go beside the chair guests always head for in our living room to stop them putting cups of coffee on the window sill beside it and spilling it when they reach up to get it(which gets right up SWMBOs nose   ). I don't know now though cos its a bit too nice according to SWMBO so may go in the collection of 'for sale items'. I'll just have to try and find some 'uglier' timber to make one for our guests
