Phew Chris...that's got me stumped! Get it...oh please yerselves.
Superficially it has a passing look of chestnut, ash, Rhodedendron, conker even Lime or Plane. I'm struggling with this one

Clue it is quite light in weight, yet has a very fine grain you can just about mark the surface with a thumb nail and it is an evergreen.

that must have been a veritable Triffid if you got that much off it. Have you turned any of it?

No afraid not, that's the only piece I have, it was just one short log that I picked up, it growing up an Elm tree that was cut down some 35+ years ago, the log it's self started to end crack very quickly so I cut a few small planks from it which surprisingly dried very well staying very flat.Random Orbital Bob":3lyp1i7c said:

funny enough that Yew extravaganza I got last week had a big lump of Ivy on the ground. I didn't bother with it, wish I had now

Recognized it =D> Not that I'm knowledgeable, only that it cost us a lot of money because of the damage it causes. but it burns well
Seriously it is literally a killer. Last year we had to have 120 Feet of 30 year old conifers removed . Some years ago the trees had been reduced too & kept about 12 feet high and about 10 feet thick, it was very dense and difficult to see into.
The variegated leaves of the Ivy had always looked good intertwined with the trees . Then large sections of Conifer/Ivy started collapsing :x . The Ivy had climbed the Conifer trunks encircling them as it went, strangling them There were only 2 tree’s in the entire length that were still alive.
The largest Conifer trunk was approximately 12 inches diameter. The largest Ivy was about 10 inches at the base :shock: .
It took 2 Tree surgeons nearly 3 days to remove & shred the hedge. I kept most of the large Conifer & Ivy trunks for the Burner.
We have managed to save the Conifers growing across the garden by severing the climbing Ivy at the base of the tree's. In the year since doing that the Ivy that had started to encircle the trees has died and has begun to release its grip on the trunks.
