I use a small ladle or a desert spoon (if the paint is thick), with the 'destination container/receptacle' held above the paint tin. No mess apart from maybe a few drips, and the ladle/spoon wipes and cleans easier than any tin edge.
I have cheap pound-shop stainless steel spoons and ikea make some very useful mini ladles (not sure if they still do).
