There is an auction of timber and tools at HJ Pugh in Ledbury, Glos tomorrow from 10.30am. There's viewing today from 2-4pm.

I would love to be able to go, but can't. I'd like to do a feature in British Woodworking about buying wood at auction and buying secondhand tools. If anyone decides to go, could they take some photos for me, and take some notes? Their number is 01531 631122 and website hjpugh.com.

Thanks

Nick

Happy New Year Nick, and to everybody come to that.

If it wasn't so far (or if the weather was warm enough for a trip out on the bike) I'd have been more than happy to cover that for you Nick, sounds like a nice day out.
Sadly though I have to return the traditional "Christmas-jumper-that-doesn't-fit" tomorrow, along with a little light post-Christmas family shopping trip. Saturday in Bluewater with wife and daughter - can't begin to tell you how much I'm looking forward to it  . No, really, I can't

Lordy, that is a lot of lots: 680 lots of woodwork tools and wood.

It would be an hour each way for me. I wonder if I can convince SWMBO to let me off the childcare in the morning...

How many people turn up to these sorts of things? Do you end up with hundreds of people, or is it one or two that turn up and buy most of it?

If I go, I will end up spending all night calculating what the wood would cost new to make sure that I got a decent bargin...

Although looking at the results of the last timber sae (http://www.hjpugh.com/timbersales/050408.pdf) some bargins can be had: 5 Sycamore boards (48 x 6 x 3) for £22; 10 Ash boards (30 x 6 x 1 ½) for £10.

Again, difficult to make at short notice (only just up the road for me but had not heard of it before).

Is this auction a one off or a regular event at this size?

BRgds All (and happy new year!)
Simon

They usually have 3 a year.

Nooooooooooooo! Don't do it Nick! Pleeeeeeease don't advertise this auction. There are too many people there as it is. More people means higher prices.

Now I've just got to make sure I'm in front of every photo Roger tries to take. Oops, that pile of wood just fell on Roger while he was about to take his first photo.

I'm interested to read the eventual article. Always wondered whether buying wood his way was economical

Unless I have done my maths wrong, the wood seemed to be between £5 and £20 per cu. ft.

I will be there tomorrow. I will be easy to spot: thirtyish, dark hair and beard, glasses, another camera and a slightly bemused look as I wonder if breathing wrong is going to end up with me buying a battleship or something ;)

Well, I managed to get a late notice 'pink ticket' from SWMBO and made it up to the viewing this first thing at 8 this morning.

A really good set-up and warm (ish) as well given -5 outside. There were a lot of tools for the restoration enthusiast (is that politically correct enough!) as well as a smaller selection of quality stuff.

I had hoped to pick up some spalted beech but most appeared to be either well gone or marked rather than spalted. A lovely 36" dia slice of monkey puzzle but not sure where I would put it when turned.

I left some (admidly optimistic) bids on some stuff and left. I would be interested to know if others went, any bargins landed etc.

BRgds

Well thats another auction come and gone without anything. There were a lot of people there and hence the prices were higher than usual. There also wasn't as much timber as I've seen at previous auctions although the quality did seem a little better. I've got loads of timber already so I wasn't really after much more than firewood (yes, I've bought firewood there before - scraps that nobody else wanted).

I stayed until about 1ish but couldn't cope with hanging about for another 3 hours just to find out I couldn't afford the few items I was after. Came home and carried on with my drawer cabinet instead.

Good to see RogerS, Mahking and Frugal there. More fun as a bit of a gathering than a buying event.

Look forward to seeing what turns up in the mag.

Very dark long cold drive up to Ledbury, -11 when I left with the missus.
Nice to see some forum members there, Frugal, Dave etc.
Bought one or two bits and pieces.... :p
Cheers,
Martin

I have to agree with Dave, the prices seemed higher than previous years and not so much to buy. I too came away with nothing. SWMBO liked the piece of Monkey Puzzle, but without a specific project in mind, thought it too expensive to live in the garage until we thought of a use.

Always next year I guess!

Hi Bob,

Did you stay and notice what the monkey puzzle went for? It looked a real beauty!

Bob, I didn't see you there. Would have said hello if I'd spotted you.

Simon, the monkey puzzle went for 100 quid. Price was driven up by RogerS who very nearly got it.

Slippy slide to theeeeeeeee turning sideeeee  You could then be known as tom the turner. t.t.t.

Dave. There was a lot of people there so I am not surprised you didn't see me, or me you. I think I would recognise you, at least I hope I would! See you there next year.

The monkey puzzle was a lovely piece and would have made a handsome table top. But I think with things like that you need to have a project in mind (at least I do) or it will end up gathering dust.

Bob
