Purchased this timber offcut when dirty and sawn thinking it was american oak, but I think it might be Ramin or Obeche, quite light in weight for its volume.

Hi DevonWoody,

Deffinately not Ash. Obeche is very light wieght and Ramin splinters apparently go very nasty. My other thought is that it could be Idigbo, although that is normally more yellow, the grain pattern looks about right though.

Hope this helps,

Richard

I think idigibo will perhaps be the correct one because the supplier had this timber on its stock list at the time.

Wht is the timber normally used for?
flooring?

It's used in the construction of windows quite a lot today, mainly because it's cheaper (and safer!) to work with than something like iroko (I think that's correct, anyway). A lot of people believe it isn't best-suited to this application though, mainly because of its "wooly" qualities. :?

I don't see why you can't make some nice boxes from it, though!

Idigbo is often used for exterior joinery as an alternative to Oak. Many people believe it has a similar appearence although I fail to see it :? !
