I have one, like you I wanted to try it out without a huge outlay, it does a job, and you can get reasonable results

Like with a lot of things the more expensive tools are easier and better to use

There is a pyrography pen & kit on ebay at £50 but it is from China so isn't going to be quick delivery

New 50W Multifunction Pyrography Machine Gourd Wood Crafts Tool Kit

Someone on here said they bought one but haven't seen a review of it as yet

I've had one for about 6 years now, perfectly adequate for my purposes, eg. initials , date & species on the base of turned work, and have just done a batch of chopping boards with a "Happy Christmas etc etc" message down one side.
My one comment is that you do have to be patient and let it warm up fully, and then touch on a piece of scrap wood before starting, otherwise the first half inch or so of your line burns deeper than the rest.

Sound advice

I've had one for a few years. It works well but the handle can get a bit hot. It also takes a bit of practice to use it well as it has 1 heat setting and different woods mark at VERY different rates. The stamps are a good range and are fun to begin with but unless you're doing designs for kids then you lose interest in them fairly quickly. tHere are some that I use a fair bit as they help give interesting markings using the shapes for curves etc.

Its a bit of a difference between £8 and £115

If you have never tried it, £8 is not to much of a risk but £115 definitely is
