Hi All
I'm interested in making a thin parting tool from a HSS planer blade.
Will it work?
Has anyone ever done it?

I'm planning to use it for 'cutting bowls from boards', so the thinner the better
Cheers
Geoff

There are a few online videos of people making parting tools from circular saw blades, so that's also an option?
I've got one of those Bosch reciprocating saws (PSA700?) and used an old blade to make a thin one...

Thinnest one I have is about 3mm but its on a regular turning chisel handle. I have never liked the idea of hanging onto something with a knife type handle at the lathe.
Regards
John

Measured mine today at 1.2mm wide. Blade protrudes 63mm.
Never known it to deflect unless sideways pressure is applied after the cut has started.

This morning I thought I'd try the DIY approach with a meat clever that's been sat unused in the drawer for several years. It now identifies as a thin parting tool. 🙂
