Are these a good idea regarding safety etc are the easy to use? I have been offered one and am wondering if it is a better idea than my cheapo thicknesser, the planer is a multico cast iron job, thanks in advance

Chris

I've not used a machine with one but they tend not to have anti-kickback pawls like a thicknesser and ther is no power feed so you have to shove it all in by hand.

I suppose it depends on the amount of thicknessing you are likely to do and what the plate will cost vs a benchtop thicknesser

If you mean one of hose cast iron jobbies that is raised or lowered over the cutter block then I can tell you that they are useless!
A tapered piece of timber will remain tapered, just thinner!

Had one on my old Coronet Consort, and it was just about useable, but a real pain. Personally, I wouldn't consider another unless REALLY desperate. In the end, I replaced the Coronet attachment with the works of a Chaiwanese p/t, which was at least easier to use, if not that accurate.
