Hi All,

Anyone know of an alternative supplier for the large thicknessing calipers? Something along the lines of.......

....but not Veritas!

£30 seems a little steep to me for a caliper, however well it's engineered, although I must confess to buying most of my stuff used, or 'previously cherished' as BMW would have it.

Cheers,

Neil.

Well, if you want the frugal approach, you can take a thick, stiff piece of wire (like the wire on the bottom of one of the metan mesh fences, I think we call them cyclone fences here) and bend it into the D shape. Make sure that the tips are 90 degrees to each other, just like the ones in your link. You adjust by bending it out or in. and leave it about 1/4 inch more than the desired thickness of whatever you are turning. Use only light pressure when checking for thickness. I got this from a Dave Ellsworth video.

Frugal sounds good for now! I'll have to speak nicely to the financial controller (swmbo) regarding the Veritas option, or keep an eye on eBay for used goodies.

Thanks for the ideas/links guys.

Neil.

I use a variety of calipers and also the wire method mentioned by Robo Hippy.
I posted some pictures showing the technique here

The wire came from B&Q

The calipers I use are plastic and came from the Proops Brothers stall at the Harrogate show - I couldn't find the exact model on the website.
I also have a large set that I made from phenolic.

Hope that helps

Duncan
