one place i worked at we had drag races with them, we had dollys we kneeled on and held the sander on the floor in front, super long ext leads, and off we went, those were the days lol,

I picked up a random JCB belt sander from the big orange DIY place a few years ago as it was on sale and I needed to sand down all our outdoor furniture. It was rubbish for that. BUT what i did find was that it sits flat upside down and once secured to the bench is really useful for just sanding the odd rough bit to size. So that might be a consideration for you if you don't have a disc sander etc. (which I don't.)

ON the original subject, I do a fair bit with pallet wood also and run it through a Triton thicknesser. I've never had a problem with the blades/nails etc. but I guess there's always a first time and I am a bit OCD about getting all the old nails out.

What about a hand plane ???
Who want's all that dust from sanding anyway,
A cheap no.4 for questionable stuff, and a no.5 1/2 for afterwards.
Oh yea, a metal detector wand also...
It dosen't take long to do.

I will never use the sander for that kind of thing ever again.
