well what can i say, sorry for the delay in posting been busy.
Right then, day started very wet and foggy on the way there, but it wasn't going to dampen my spirits, i was up for it.
Arrived at about 9.30, Richard was there waiting for me, so we had a coffee and chatted about what i wanted to achieve on that day.

After sorting out my goal for the day we started on a maple bowl,

richard keeping a close eye on my progress..

After turning the outer shape Richard shows me where to begin on the inside,

A quick demo of the type of cut i should be doing

after a great morning, we had lunch and then started on an Oak Ogee shaped platter. Although this was more difficult to do, with richards guidance he made the process seem very easy to achieve.

To sum up the day, if anyone seriously wants to learn how to do things, then a day with a pro is well worth it, richard is one of those people who is there to help but never in the way, always got his eye on progress but you never feel like he his hanging over the top of you, he is a polite, calm and very imformative guy who will show you all you need to know to achieve your desired results.
i will be re-booking Richard in the near future for a session of lidded boxes and maybe a trial at hollow forms.
many thanks Richard for a great day out, i am off work next week and look forward to some time in my cabin.
I cant let this post pass by without giving thanks to my wife who made this day possible for me, she also provided us with a great lunch and coffee throughout the day, bless her..

ps
the different types of cut i used during the day

Well done to you & Richard.
Very glad to hear (& see) you had a great time.

Hi Steve and Richard,
Well after your earlier nervous sounding posts waiting for your session I bet you are really pleased with the outcome Steve and the photographs prove you have learnt a great deal!
Likewise Steve's report on your tuition must be very rewarding and good luck with your tuition services Richard.
Regards,
Ian

Jeez , i cant belive i had to search on page 2 for this post, has everyone gone mad or what,
Thanks guys, hopefully there will be other days like this onein the future.

Hi all,

Thanks for the post Steve :D

We had a really good day. With a few pointers Steve was soon making the shavings fly! I thought he showed good tool control and took in all he was told. I hope he can remember everything for next time he's at his lathe  !

We both discovered the difference beween working with a lovely easy working wood like Maple and a more difficult timber like Oak. It was less in its working properties, more in the fact the bit of Oak I selected was quite dusty and chippy. Even so, Steve achieved a good finsh on his little platter.

It's worth noting that the little platter had quite a sharply undercut rim which Steve executed well and achieved a good finish from the tool.

I would also like to thank Mrs Steve for her excellent lunch. They came stocked up as if they were staying all week!!! (despite forgetting the Salad that Steve had slaved over for hours   )

Well done Steve. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and look forward to your next visit.

Cheers,

Richard

You sound as if the day has inspired you to get out there and turn
Looks like you had a great day and what a great gift from your wife...
love the goblet and puzzle ring....

I can vouch for the expertise of Richard Findley.

He has patiently been tutoring me at "Hands on" evenings at Tudor Rose Woodturners and at Woodex 09 in the use of the skew.

I have been turning for 16 years but the skew had literally gone rusty because of my specialising in bowls, dishes and platters.

That is all going to change now but I doubt if it would have happened if Richard had not been willing to help.

Regards, Peter.

hello peter and welcome to the forum, i can say my day out with Richard was memorable, and i shall be doing it again soon.
