What a bunch of miserable buggers you are, I suspect you have the ability to find fault with most things in life

I'm too busy out in the workshop to watch TV nowadays but I think they should put ALL sports on the Sports channels and keep the normal channels for general entertainment for the majority of viewers.
We have British world champions in many other sports but most of them don't get a mention on the normal channels (like world superbikes etc) they prefer to show "British" sportsmen who nearly win rather than the genuine winners who are the worlds best.

I guess the idea to bring it to the main channels is to get everyone involved. I myself am unlikely to switch over to the sports channels (not sure I even have any), but if it's on the main channels, I'll happily watch it, which I think many other people would be the same.

With the amount of variation, I'd find it hard to believe there are people who hate it all!

There is also the chance to expose people (especially the young, who might not otherwise be interested) into sport and keeping fit. I wouldn imagaine it's much easier to get young people into these activities after they have seen the worlds greatest in action.

It's not the sport per se that annoys me, it's its supposed importance and the assumption by sport lovers that everyone else should like it and watch it, and its hogging of mainstream channels because of it. For all the talk of the legacy of the London olympics, nothing much happened (except a football club got a taxpayer funded stadium?) - and I doubt the powers that be have been anything like honest about the cost of them.

For me there is so little early evening TV that is worth watching, I don't do soaps for example, that I have found myself wandering up and down the 8 red button Olympic channels quite often and have ended up enthused by the abilities of the sports people in whatever has piqued my interest. I am not a great sports fan normally but I do consider myself patriotic and always wish England, GB or the UK all the best.

Failing that I resort to anyone of 30 great boxed sets I'm slowly working my way through. (Currently on season one of 12 Monkeys which I can't make my mind up about.)

Blimey how did you know?

I caught myself moaning about something or other & stopped.
I said to the wife "I think I'm turning into a miserable old git".
She said "what do you mean, turning"

I think must be turning into a Victor Meldrew too as I think most of the TV is tosh! I do remember when the BBC provided some very good programmes but I think now that costs too much so they put any junk on. I am even watching Al Jazeera news now as it gives more news on World affairs and less on the Olympics.

Based on the limited coverage I have seen so far, not a huge amount I must admit, it looks like we can look forward to seeing lots of half empty Olympic venues. The other evening I reckon only 1 in 5 seats were full at the tennis and even beach volleyball was maybe only 80% full (and I highlight it ot for the obvious reason but because it is a popular sport in Brazil). I went to enormous lengths to get tickets for lots of events at London 2012, but looks like I could pitch up on the door at the start of an event in Rio and buy a ticket there and then.

I suspect political upheaval may have contributed, but ultimately the tickets almost certainly cost too much to be affordable for the majority of Brazillians and the distances are just too great for many to travel from other parts of Brazil let alone wider South America. I know it is a view many would not agree with, but the choice of venue for the Olympics, World Cup, etc. seem to be driven by politics and political correctness. But if they want full venues and to maximise the number of people seeing the evnts they need to have them in first world countries every time.

Terry.

Lol. Kerching you mean. "You get your Olympic Games, my wife gets a lovely new frock."

Probably.

Whereas with the World Cup, definitely.

There's an excellent documentary on YouTube about the forced evictions in Rio, perhaps the BBC could put that on the red button?

We're just working our way through the full boxed set of "Cold Feet" which we somehow missed the first time around.

I have to agree with Dr Bob - I'm not a great sports fan but there's been some really exciting and gripping stuff shown on the TV and it's called the Olympics!

I'm not a great sports fan either but some of the events have been quite good. I've enjoyed the Cycling and Archery. I watched the farmers gun shoot out for bronze and found that pretty dull. I would have liked to see some of the 10m shooting but I missed it. Track cycling is on my list to see next and maybe some weight lifting. I won't be watching any golf, tennis, football or rugby though ...

I've set my set-top box to "watch" various pistol shooting events 4 times the last two nights - it prompts to change the channel at the correct time - and every single time it's been taken off the schedule, or moved, with no explanation. So far I haven't seen a shot fired.

Well according to the Brazilians and the IOC claim every ticket for the Rio Olympics have been sold. Well I just saw the news showing the opening of the athletics and the stadium was almost empty, so I am afraid I think they are liars. That simply cannot be due to corporate ticket holders not turning up. At least the Chinese had the good grace to bus people in to fill the empty seats.

On another note I have just been reading up a little bit on Eddie the Eagle (saw him on TV this morning). Apparently the IOC actually changed the rules just to stop anyone like him competing again (but not sure how that chap called The Eel got in). It also turns out that he was nominated to be a torch bearer for 2012, he was the only past Olympian to have his nomination rejected by the powers that be. Admittedly I am inherently anti the establishment but this sort of thing really gets me wound up. He is a normal chap who made huge sacrifices and showed unbelievable bravery to achieve his dream, what is so wrong with that?

Terry - Who will now not be watching any more of the Olympics.

The womens beach volleyball started today. There's already been a wrist injury, but i think i should be OK by tomorrow.
