Has anybody else noticed inconsistencies in the degree of hardness? I usually buy the DT on Fridays and it lasts me through the week. On Fridays, it’s always Moderate and Diabolical puzzles. Several times in recent months I wondered if the setter had been on the pop or if the Compositors (do they exist anymore?) were trying to be funny labelling the puzzles the wrong way round. There was a Diabolical one recently that was just SO easy. For those who don’t know the diabolical ones always need you to suppose/ guess the way forward and test it out – brilliant. Ian

I haven’t tried the times ones, there aren’t – well there’s been only one diabolical I haven’t been able to do and I felt sure it was set up wrongly. I did a tough one from the daily express the other day, pimps. I shall have to buy The Times and give it a try. I do enjoy stretching my brain now and again.

My daughter gave me a book with Telegraph sudokus . I finished all but one diabolical. My wife brings the Guardian and the Mail home on Saturdays along with the Waitrose Weekend magazine. I don't usually struggle with the Mail difficult, and I can usually do the Guardian expert, but the Waitrose Weekend tricky I find the most difficult. I also like the Samurai Sudoku that's sometimes in the Mail. I agree that there are what seems to be inconsistencies though.

Nigel.

If you have an Android phone I can highly recommend the app "Enjoy Sudoku"; despite the fact I absolutely suck at solving the puzzles.

I was introduced to killer suduko recently, and once you understand a few basics to get started (the sum of each 9 number block, and of all straight lines is 45) they become addictive.
The Futoshiki puzzle in The Times is easier than sudoku, but quite fun.

Wednesday is the best day if you're trying the Times - it has a super fiendish, a fiendish and a difficult. The sudokus in I can be (not all that often, though) quite difficult and it's cheaper to try at 65p.

Thanks Phil I’ve just put it on my shopping list for today, I like the sound of a super fiendishly difficult Puzzle

You shouldn't have too much of a problem if you can do D.T. diabolicals.
I do them on line as I subscribe and I've not found the way to note the possibilities, so work "blind" - if doing them in the paper I rarely failed.
