I am rather fond of the odd banana and always tuck into one during a game of golf and when feeling peckish in the workshop. A tasty and filling snack.

Whilst peeling my banana this weekend my golf partner noted that I opened the fruit by snapping the stalk, before peeling it in stages revealing bite sized chunks for consumption. The last piece being squeezed upward and removed from the skin.

My partner maintained that I had opened the banana the wrong way round. He suggested that the stalk should be left as a sort of handle, and the fruit opened the other way. This had the added advantage that the little black bit at the end would be discarded as part of the opening process.

I have given this matter some thought over the last few days and I have to say that this new approach has some merits. I would however be interested to learn of members techniques and thoughts as to the correct way to eat a banana.

Does anyone know how monkeys eat bananas in the wild?

Hi Tony,
Your partner is correct, i seen a banana farmer demonstrate said way on GMTV one morning when they were doing a bit about fair trade, probably where your partner seen it too.
Cheers,
Gary.

This could be the strangest question ever asked on this forum :D

I do it the same way as you.

Years ago there was a huge gorilla at the London zoo called Guy. I once watch him carefully peel a banana then - throw away the pulp and eat the skin!

I don't recall from which end he peeled it unfortunately.

Yup, I know how gorillas eat bananas. They open them from the middle and bite across the flesh, not from one end and eat down. Try it - it has a different texture when bitten that way, much smoother.

The correct way of course is with a knife and fork, one slices the banana skin lengthways and then cuts slices from the flesh all dainty like.

The only problem with treying to open a banana from the non-stalk end is you would need something to score the skin with first. In the workshop of course I have a specially sharpened hock blade for just such an eventuality, on the golf course may I suggest a sharpened golf tee?

However, the absolutely best way is to slice the banana lengthways, poke chocolate buttons in the cut and heat gently until the chololate melts. Not so practical on the 9th tee but worth trrying at home!

Cheers,

Steve.

The trick to opening a banana via the non-stalk end is to pinch the tip firmly, rather than trying to snap it (as one would with the stalk end). The pinched end will split, allowing you to peel the skin back. This has the advantage that you don't end up with the squished bit you sometimes get when a snap goes wrong.

I think you need to get out more!

Hi,
Have you tried a whole banana cooked on the BBQ untill the skin is black then split lenghtways and had Baylies poured in? its one of the best ways.

I always peel from stalk end but push nail into one of the ribs and split it down this line. (Does that make sense?)

It leaves a small mark but better than the squishy top I always seemed to get bending top back!

That sound really good. Like the part about cooking till the skin is black - thats the way I cook all my food on the BBQ :D

Cheers :D

Some nice recipes fellas. I have had a banana on the bbq with treacle and cream and that was succulent. I will try the buttons idea not so sure about the baileys...bit girlie.

How strange that Guy the gorilla ate the skin and not the fruit.

Poor old Guy, I think he must have been locked up too long.
Saw a Gorilla in the wild on TV, he opened it from the side with his thumb nail and pulled off the skin in one movement and slipped the flesh into his mouth.

Escudo your method is good because I heard that in last inch of banana remain quantity of pesticides used during banana growth.

I also learnt or heard this week that if you rub the inside skin of a banana on dry skin of your heels you should return to the status of a young lad.
