Textured Yew Platter

Hello evryone , managed to get back in the shed again yesterday and decided to use up a piece of yew thats been lying around, it had a very crumbly/rotten bit of sapwood going down one side. Rather than cut it away I decided to use it in a rustic/worn kind of way, making a wide rimmed platter with the rim textured with wire brushing and the 'bowl' part sanded very smooth and glossed for contrast. Its 12" wide.

Good choice of texturing on the outer JT, enough to incorporate the unsound portion and maintain an impression of symmetry.

Is the dark line / groove that separates the smooth bowl part from the rim coloured / burnt ? or is it just lighting from the photo that give it that effect?

Any chance of a pic' of the side on profile and one of the underside too?

Reason being, I have some large shallow pieces of yew that I keep meaning to get around using for platters, but haven't got round to yet and your's might just be the inspiration to make me start !

Don't think my timber is as nicely figured though unfortunately !

Looks great on the underneath too Johnny !

Had wondered if you had followed the interior bowl contour on the outside as well and then a flat rim, but looks simpler and still nice and elegant.

Might have to see if I can get the time this weekend to have a go.

How did you burn the black line in on top ? I'm familiar with using a wire on a spindle turning but not sure how you would do in this situation, although I expect the answer will be blindingly simple when mentioned !!!

The line was marked with the point of a skew and then burnt with a piece of formica(a bit of end coverstrip for kitchen worktops)
