Hello all, I've not been turning or doing much else for the last month as I've been a bit ill  . Today I dragged myself out to the shed braved the cold and had a little play

This was the last thing I made on dec 4th. Its made from a very old Oak board full of cracks and dust. Its textured with a wire brush and airbrushed and finished with a polyurethane coating. Its 12" in diameter.

This is what I made today, from the same board. Its been heavily burned and textured and the inside dyed red. Its finished with a liberal coating of CSS which has been buffed when nearly dry to give a bit of gloss on the high spots of the texturing. It is also 12" wide.

These both look really good to me. I like the shapes as well as what you have done to them. Nice start to the year

Although showing controlled working and discipline in the post turning treatment the wood still maintains enough character of its own to fit in with the 'Drift Wood' theme.

If that's what you were aiming for of course

Hi Johnny,

Welcome back! I thought we'd not heard from you for a while.

When I first looked at these (only saw the first bowl before scrolling down) I thought: "I'm surprised he's not gone more rustic with that bit of wood" but it still works, makes me think of the sea. Then I scrolled down and found the more rustic look! This works as well! Kind of in a different way, hard to describe because they are the same but different.

Either way, I like them! Good job.

Richard

Hi Johnny,
Happy New Year and I'm sorry to hear you have not been well.
The bowls are looking well weathered and suitably coloured and not a bad start back in the workshop.
I particularly like the second one as the red centre makes it look as though it is still smoldering.
Keep up the good work and get back to full fitness to get on with the bat cave.
Best regards from a very snowy East Yorkshire
Ian

Thanks for the replies :D

Pete, glad you like them, I thought they may be your sort of thing(especially the last one).

Thanks Chas, yes its the driftwood/weathered look. The feel of them is as important(or at least adds another dimention to them) as the look.

Richard, cheers, the idea for the colouring on the first one was "Sea and Sky" so glad you can see that 8)

Ian,thanks, the design of the second one was for a 'hot looking centre' so its good to see that you picked up on that 8), its not often others see what I intended in things
I am keen to get back on with the bat cave but the next job with it is chipping the surface of all the old bricks for the first render coat, so I need to get some energy back to attempt that

cheers JT

Missed your work Johnny !

Very nice, Love the airbrushing of the first one.

Just a cheapy Clarke from Machine Mart, its not very good but was only a tenner and I got it just to try really. I will get a better one soon
