Or mansions being built? (the last one I can think of is Castle Drago in Devon around 1910 and that is falling to pieces, made of concrete?)
Or am I suffering some illusions?

There's an imitation of a Georgian(?) mansion just north of Bicester, built some time in the last ten years for a sheik, as you might expect. It's a very accurate copy, to the extent that it actually looks convincingly original. Surprisingly, there is (or was a few years back) a public footpath through the grounds which runs within a few hundred yards of the house and gives a good view of it. No idea what the furnishings are like, though.
FWIW, I tend to agree with DW, but more on grounds of style than necessarily workmanship.

**** can you pinpoint the location on this google satelite map

I regularly pass through Bicester when visiting family in Bucks.

Who would get £50k for a piece of furniture they had made today?

John Makepeace, for one. If you wanted to commission something particularly grand, I suspect you could get well into six figures.

There are many makers out there producing stunning pieces to commission. In my experience, the people who spend their money on this kind of work do not like to crow about it and the makers are sensibly discreet.

Agreed. Though I would quibble with the word 'many'.

The few people I've met who have really cracked this market have had one thing in in common: they move in the right circles and are very good at quickly forming close relationships with the sort of people who have that kind of money to spend. It's got a lot to do with managing client perceptions and being able to project confidence that you are 'worth it'. Most of them get others to do the making while they design and schmooze (not saying there's anything wrong with that). Granted the product has to be of a certain standard, but it's easier to produce something that impresses when you have a £30,000 budget to spend....

Some people live in a completely different financial reality to everyone else. Basically they can have what they want. They want to spend their money on something or they wouldn't have gone to the trouble of getting it, so why not commission some wooden bling?

had a quick look, but I can't exactly remember where it was. Will have to ask SWMBO if she remembers - we rented a cottage there about 5 years ago. While we were there, I managed to crack the sump on the Golf on an obstruction in the road. Expensive, so I suspect my subconscious is trying to blot it out :D

Later:-
Found it. We were staying at Pimlico Farm, which is just north of Tusmore hamlet on the west of the A43, about 2 miles north of Junction 10 of the M40. The house was directly across the A43 from the farm. Possibly called Tusmore House?

Thanks, went looking on google, found pimlico farm, the satellite images are very good in that area but did not trace the house mentioned. Interesting look in the area tho.

Just had a look, and it's on the satellite map. Find the marker for Pimlico farm, and draw a line exactly at right angles to the course of the A43 and you'll cross the house about the same distance from the east side of the road as is the farm marker from the west. To the south of the house, you'll see a network of winding tracks (they look a bit like the outline of a hippopotamus!) through what is an infant arboretum.

(Couldn't see the oil stains from the accident with the Golf, though :) )

I've just spotted that there's a programme coming up on BBC4 about the Kimbolton Cabinet at the V&A:

It's on Tuesday 5 March at 20.00 on BBC4 so set your PVR/SkyPlus etc now!

Definition on google was not good this morning, I see there are buildings at Trusmore Park and another building to the N.E. of Trusmore park but still no sharp picture.

But Thanks for your directions.
