Hello :D

For a while I've been using a non tapered plug cutter in my cordless drill with good success. Recently I ordered a tapered plug cutter with the hope of also using it in my cordless.

Not so good, the bit doesn't throw me round like a rag doll, but the plugs 'snap' before the cutter bottoms out. This results in a plug which isn't long enough to be of any use. I know the problem is any slight lateral movement causes the plug to 'snap' early.

Unfortunately I don't have a pillar drill so is there any alternative methods to using a tapered cutter? Also, my cordless drill won't fit in any of the drilling stands that are available. I was looking around to see if there was a router based alternative (I have an old 1/4" Elu) but I guess even the lowest speed is still too fast.

Although I use a pillar drill with these (Veritas?), I've not had a problem where the plugs snap in hardwoods (ash, walnut, cherry). What timber are you using? I guess pine or some other softwood could be more problematic, regardless of which drill you're using...

I'm sure there are router cutters available which will do the same thing, I just can't find them right now. However, I have a feellng you may need a 1/2" router for this - but, I'm sure someone else will be along to confirm shortly... :)

A pillar drill or morticer will help you out no end here, with a bit of practice (something to do with offcuts when you only have a few minutes to play) you can line them up so all you do is tap them all out with a mallet from the side and there's no wood left betweem them, great fun!
