Yes, tallow is animal fat. My daughter is a vegan and will not use soap or candles unless made from olive oil such as savon de Marseilles. Candles are a problem as although they can be made from beeswax strict vegans will not use it.
Wool grease is also known as lanolin which I find very useful for lubricating woodscrews, just dip the tip in, it makes driving the screws much easier and allows you to withdraw them later as they do not corrode in the wood.

Make tallow candles for the old fashioned look ,don't light them though unless you want to redecorate and they stink a lot as well .

I have a tallow candle used for fluxing lead came for stained glass work (not that I do much)

One of the Instructors at Technical College would always reference tallow when talking about brass screws.
He’d dip the screw in tallow before driving them in, l think there was another reason as well as lubrication but it escapes me.
