Tall Elm Bowl

Got some Elm down the local wood yard yesterday, its been there a long long time and is very very dry,making it pretty difficult to work. This is the first piece from it, the wooden bit is 6" tall and the brass legs are a couple of inches tall. The raised band is carved and painted with acrylics and it is finished in Danish oil.

Comment and critiques as ever welcome.

Nice piece of Elm Johnny.
I like the feet on this one,but i think the band looks too heavy making the whole piece look heavier,if you see what i mean.Good effect again though on the band

A lovely piece of elm, with the raised band looking very good and the legs complimenting colours of both the wood and the band.

I prefer fewer legs!!

I can imagine this about 3 - 4 foot diameter in a Grecian temple. Not sure how it would look small but it looks great in the picture. Your ability t think outside the normal parameters is really refreshing. I think if you produced a bog standard bowl I'd be shocked :lol:
Still haven't told me how you are doing that texturing or have I missed something?

Excellent work JT. Can`t decide if a gloss finish would compliment the decorative band or not but stunning to look at =D>

I actually like the heavy band ... its like a blacksmith / cooper, heated that up and quench-fitted it over the "Barrel" ( the bowl )... its yet another great piece from the JT Stable ! love it

Paul,the band is mean't to be big and in your face in keeping with the chunky deep bowl and then lifted with the three more delicate looking legs.

Steve, I wondered for a while what finish to go with but decided I liked what oil does for elm,darkening and really bringing the grain out.I think the shiny brass legs go with the matt finish of the oil too.

Still haven't told me how you are doing that texturing or have I missed something?

Yes I did!! you just haven't seen the reply where I did so :lol: :lol: Its all just done with a dremmel, bit time consuming but I think worth it.

I love this bowl. I get so many ideas from all who show there turning on here, very inspiring. I like the decorative band especially when some of the original wood is left. Filed under 'one day' in my workshop jotter. :lol:

Yes another piece out of the JT workshop with your signature all over it and very well it looks too. I do like the bold band and can understand why you wanted that look.
