I just got a new Sorby rs230kt hollowmaster(swan necked hollowing tool) and thought I'd best take it for a bit of a spin :D . I made two hollow forms from my heap of spalted sycamore I'm trying to get through....

The finial is made from walnut, both are finished with hard wax. The one with the finial is 5 1/2" tall and the vase is 6" tall. I like the new tool very much and the round scraper tip it comes with leaves the insides really smooth :) .Let me know what you think.

cheers JT

Very nice,John - like the finial as well :D ;for me,it's in proportion to the vase, and has enough detail on it to work well.

I recently bought the RS130KT (midi hollowmaster) but haven't had chance to play with it yet.. :(

Johnny that one with the finial is a cracker...
not that the other one isn't ... but the more 'bulbous' one really catches the eye... that is very nice indeed.
You're fairly 'taking off' with the H/F's ! -- thats brilliant :)

Really impressed with that, and your progress on the hollowing... terriffic !

Great development on the hollowing JT, have a preference for the first one on form, both appear well finished and wood colour is crisp and clean,.
That is certainly some nice sycamore, so much of what I have experienced has been shot through with a dirty grey cast.

That wood is beautiful and fortunately you have done it justice. Personally I prefer the look of the second one but that''s just me. Keep going and show us more.

Very nice, I like them both.
If I had to choose, the second looks to be more balanced, but that is not a criticism just a personal thing.
excellent work.

Lovely turning there John.
I have just made my first hollow form with a nice piece of green Sycamore but made the mistake of leaving it too thick and the ruddy thing split in 3 places after leaving it in a warm dining room
Lesson learnt for next time.
Cheers
Steve

Hi JT,
2 very nice pieces, with lovely wood.
I prefer the shape of the top one with finial, however they are both far better than I could do at the moment

Malc :D

Beautiful John, especially the first one with the finial. It's amazing what you can find inside a normally bland timber such as Sycamore.

Thanks for the replies, I've had loads of this sycamore ,practically the whole tree,I think I still have the biggest trunk sections to come(via father-in-law)and its all got this really bright spalting down the centre of every log(best bit of all though, its free!).

cheers JT(johnny)

Hi JT,

Both pieces are great, I like the curves of each, they flow smoothly.

If I had to choose I would go for the first one as a favourite, again a personal preference.

I hope my first hollow forms turn out so well.

Regards,

Mike C

Very very nice JT :D
The finial piece gets my vote.Looks to be nicely proportioned with just enough detail on the finial.
Gorgeous looking timber.
Keep em coming :D
