Firstly, Hello everyone :D , I've not been on the lathe or on here for ages, I've had absolutely no time of late what with work, pregnant wife etc...
Today I finally got out to the shed(thanks to the rain) and decided to attack a thinnish offcut of spalted sycamore, I was a little rusty, to my shame I've not turned anything for well over a month but it was good to make some shavings 8)
Thought I'd make something a bit different, I had in my mind to do something irregular, smooth and 'naturalish' like a pebble. Two sides of this are 'natural edge' with the bark removed and then hand sanded to match the rest of the turned bit.

Sanded to 600 grit and finished with sanding sealer and a couple of coats of woodwax22 hand buffed. Comments/critique appreciated.

cheers JT

I'm not too sure what it is either  but that doesn't matter, it looks very organic (that'sgood in my book) and personally I prefer it vertical as an ornament. Nice to know I'm not the only one who does things and then wonders what I have made

i would have thought this sort of thing didn't interest me, but my how wrong i would have been, simply love it. I love the colour, shape (rather space shipish) and overal density of said thingy.

I like this too. The finish is very smooth, almost looks like it's been polished by water erosion (or has a kind of aerodynamic feel). Maybe the rim of the hollowed region is a little too close to the edge of the piece but overall it's a winner for me! :D

Objective achieved I'd say!! It's certainly different and I'd deffinatly go along with the pebble description.

Like steve, it's very different to the normal stuff you see and I think I like it!!

Well done

Richard

Wow thats different, and very lovable looking too. What thickness was the timber,I get the impression that anything over 1" would be workable, Glad you got on the lathe again, you havent lost your touch. REgards Boysie

Hi John,
What an appealing looking bowl thingy. This is ideal for the touchy-feely people who love feeling wood but never buy it!
The grain is superb and I love the shape, well done after your rest.
Regards,
Ian

Thanks for the input everyone :) I am quite pleased with how it turned out but was a bit unsure how others would see it.

PAC the hollowed area is purposly at the edge to give a dip in the rim for the worn away 'pebble' look(you can only really see it in the second pic).

Boysie, the offcut this was made from was about 1 1/2" thick, it was one of those bits that was too good to get rid of but sat on the shelf in the shed while I wondered what to do with it

Cheers JT
