It pops up all the time and doesn't go on it's own, I have to click it! Anyone know how I can switch it off?

Thanks in advance.

Forgot to mention, each time you do a Windows update this naughty little gremlin will download unless you uncheck this particular file :-x .

But not difficult to remove should you forget #-o

Regards

Bear in mind that sometime next year this 'fix' will be upgraded to 'recommended'. IIRC (please check) this means that a machine on default settings will automatically download and install without asking. :(

I can't find it now but someone posted a link somewhere that Microsoft had changed their policy on this. It may be due to losing that court case recently?

Edit, found it.

I gave up trying to block it shortly after switching it off. As Hemsby says, it's soon back. I upgraded to W10 several months ago, not noticed any changes for better or worse. However, occasionally I'll come to the computer and find it's re-booted in my absence. I presume to upgrade stuff. It's not caused me a problem....yet.

I used gwx control panel to fix my mother's PC a couple of months ago. No. Problems since, there are plenty of options to turn on or off just what you want and it is a standalone program.

Just make sure to download it from the official site

Or from a reputable site such as CNET.

There are always fake sites and programs created to take advantage of frustrated users and sometimes they can be high up on the Google rankings.

At some point Windows 7 and 8 will no longer be supported by Microsoft. New software possibly won't run on old versions of Windows. New ancillaries (printers etc) may be produced without a driver for old windows versions. Security updates will increasingly focus on Windows 10 issues, not previous generations.

I waited 9 month before updating so that any initial bugs would be identified and fixed. Update went with no problems and minor amounts of time spent on becoming familiar with new layouts and menus etc. Would recommend updating unless there is a very very good reason not to.

GWX does not affect windows update for windows 7. That includes security updates.

Support for Windows 7 ends on January 14, 2020

My mother has a lot of commitments at the moment, and it doesn't take much to baffle her.

I will probably buy her a new computer in 4 years time anyway. So the threat of missing the free update does not bother me that much.

So"...........is the consensus amongst our computer experts that windows 10 is now safe to load?

Yes, the update process is much more reliable than 12 months ago, version 1511 is a decent stable release. I update several machines daily, I own a computer repair workshop with six repair bays.

As long as the computer is running well on 7 or 8, there I now no real good reason not to, apart from the adage 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'. If the current setup is failing this really should be sorted before upgrade.

On any given computer, I find 10 runs quicker than 7, same speed as 8 but easier to navigate. With a few options turned on, 10 is as easy to navigate as 7. Grab the free upgrade this month, roll it back within a month if you don't like it and you can clean install 10 anytime in the future on that computer.

Give it a go, you may even prefer it.

There is a list somewhere of software that doesn't work under win 10 so I'd check that first before thinking of switching.
