I'm looking at making this CD store for a friend. Probably out of ash but can't quite decide on the design for the 'back' of the two opening sets of shelves....ie this will be the visible 'front' of the cabinet when it's all shut up. Shaker style using ash veneered ply in an ash frame, maybe? Or maybe jointed ash with moulded t&g to match anything existing around the room.

The big question is how to support those opening doors (each containing 250 CDs) so as to :

(a) stop it all falling forward

(b) take the weight off the piano hinge

I am also thinking that I will need some intermediate shelf supports to stop the shelves sagging.

As its drawn the pivot point is in the wrong place you won't be able to close the doors. You need teh pivot on teh two "open" edges

LOL..I noticed that this morning when I posted it up but decided to leave it to see if anyone would spot it!

Any ideas on support for the doors?

Roger, could you put small wheels on the bottom of the doors? That would support the heavy load and prevent the cabinet from tipping over.

As to the back/front of the doors, maybe thin plywood (6mm) fitted into grooves in the frame. Perhaps a horizontal rail slightly above center. Maybe that rail is actually a continuation of a shelf. The panel would then be divided into two.

For intermediate shelf supports, you could put in a couple of vertical rails under each shelf. they wouldn't have to be terribly wide if there are several of them. You might also put in a vertical divider all the way up and split the shelves so they are shorter.
