I've been doing a bit of research on using superglue as a finish on pens. I picked some up today from the pound shop. I cam across the following info on the net:

High Linoleic Acid safflower oil: This is a superb drying oil and is used in quality oil paints. It does not tend to mildew or yellow. It does dry slowly, but since mineral oil never dries then that is not an issue. If the nutritional label has Polyunsaturated fat as a much higher number (11 to 2 or so) than Monounsaturated fat then it is the right stuff. The other safflower oil (High Oleic Acid) will have the opposite ratio.

BLO handles easier than Safflower Oil, but it yellows, mildews and contains heavy metal drying agents. So I use Safflower Oil.

I've previously read that I should use BLO (boiled linseed oil) but the info above says not to. What is this safflower oil? Where can I get it from?

Cheers,

Dave

Strangely enough I tried out some CA glue as a finish today, having been recommended by an American turner. Can't say I was that impressed, dried fairly quickly, but 'lumpily' and by the time I'd got it flat with 600g wet and dry I think I was back to wood again.......so went back to friction polish.

Hi Dave, i use ca finish on all my pens and i find it to be the best.

Hi Dave, does the oil matter that much, as long as it is vegetable, and not mineral.

I understood that the oil was only there to allow the cloth to slip while coating with Cyno. Same procedure as when 'french polishing', with a rubber, the linseed oil is only used as a lubricant, and I don't believe you get any into the coat of polish.

I would think any of these oils would be OK as long as they don't discolour the Cyno.

Cheers for all the info. I'll take a trip to an art shop tomorrow and see what I find. I was aware of the bumpy/lumpy possibility using glue. Will be interesting to see if I hit the same problem (if there is a problem to hit then I normally find it).

I've got a lovely piece of wood to use so I'll post some pics once I'm done.

Cheers,

Dave

Dave, blo is used to pop the grain on the blank prior to using the ca, after you use a coat of ca use a couple of drops of blo, this cures the ca so you can do it again and again and again, depending how many coats you want, then i micro mesh to 12000 grit. hope this helps.
