I'll have a look, if I ever manage to find it ;)

I'll have to replace them, I think. I've been considering a steb centre for a while anyway.

oh you meant your finger

What about a Stebcentre that mounts in a chuck? You'll never need to remove the chuck then.

If you're after a Morse Taper Reamer, J+L industrial sell them (go to the bottom of the page)

Don't go mad with the reamer though, as a slight change in diameter will affect the fit dramatically, a couple of twists will be plenty and remember to always use lube!!

Cheers

Yeh I think that's what I'm going to go for Aled. I'm not keen on the idea of the solid headstock. I do apprecieate the direct drive for all the other benefits. I'm terrified of forgetting to put the protector on and then I'd be in the brown water.

Those reamers look a tad expensive. They have them on ebay for about £15 (which is still a bit high for something I'll use once). I might try Paul's idea with W&D

I take it I lock the head spindle, put the reamer in the hole and twist it twice ?

Yes, that's what I'd do. I have a 1MT reamer that you'd be welcome to borrow (yes, I had the same problem once), but I somehow think that the BRM has a somewhat larger hole.

You could try Paul's idea first to see how you get on.

Cheers, it's a 2MT. I'll have a play and see how I get on. The drive centre is knackered, so I can't test it at the moment anyway.

If you still have problem email me with your address ([email protected]) and I will post a "C" Spanner to you, we used them as they do not tear out the hole in the thread protector.

Regards Terry

I'm going to go slightly off the topic of extraction and ask about the thread protector.

The basic question is why? What is going to damage the thread ? Or is it there in this case as the drive shaft isn't bored through and is really used for getting centres out?

Ironically I recently got hold of a set of taps to match my nose thread (1 3/8" x 6 - UNC) with the thought of making glue chucks, but if there is recommendation for a protector then there actually isn't any reason why it shouldn't be wood. One thing I hadn't anticipated with large taps is that they need equally large tap-wrenches !
