stuck with a skew

Thanks Aled, and all here. Jumps came over today and we turned a few bits... no big accidents (not what I would call big anyway). Now I understand what Aled is saying, but it does make an enormous difference to get live demos and hands-on advice. Two points above now make real sense to me - the first 1/4 of blade, and the steb centre (cone drive).
I really wanted to be able to handle a skew with confidence and effect. I have a load of practice ahead, but at least I understand what I am trying to do, and not do.
Steb is on order, and practice is planned. Will try and make something worth looking at and post a pic.
Meanwhile, very many thanks to Jumps for taking time out and making the effort to pass on his experience.
I said before, a good lot, you turners.
(If you want to see bickering, just peep over the fence at the hand tool gang.)

John... if you stopped at pg1 then you missed my bit (around 4 - 5). It does get messier, promise.
I have tried to stop entering any chat re sharpening. I really should know better, surely? I mean I sharpen it, it cuts. End of. But then Jacob pops up and I fall for it, almost every time.
And by the way, am I allowed to bring sharpening across to turning?? ... like bringing bindweed to Hever I suspect.
Jumps picks up my smaller skew, takes out a small diamond fine and hones the edge. 15 seconds at most it's done and cuts like a new one. Just as I imagined - it's not how, it's how good.

sorry Aled, ignorance is mine. But I ordered a steb anyway, before this chat. Leo, re the vids will look at them of course. I did find the one-to-one very useful indeed, the main time now is on practice, and wasting wood! Promise I will report back. Had an idea re a stool with turned legs. At first thought a four leg, then realised just three would stand better, then I considered two...

Sorry, I missed the one to one bit  , by far the best way to learn :!: . My vids are rubbish anyway !!!!!!!!!!!!!! (hammer)

I've been meaning to produce a couple of videos on spindle turning for beginners, but am not quite sure where to start, I have the camcorder, but it's the editing that I'm not so sure about.

Cheers
Aled

Openshot is a free and easy to use video editor. now bundled with the latest ubuntu (oneieric ocelot) i believe you can try it from a live disk without even installing it.

personally, I'm never going back to windows :D

Just a note to thank Douglas for his hospitality, and tea, yesterday - these visits are a two way thing :)

I have no doubt that we will be seeing some good pieces from Douglas in due course, and I confidently predict they will be spidle turning based and made of ash! a work stool sounds a great place to start, but I have a feeling it won't be long before a ful blown captains chair turns up (these puns are addictive).

Look forward to returning in about a months time

Nothing fancy at all. A box handle for an old chisel, almost all done with the skew, from rounding the branchwood, getting the curves etc etc. The cheats were a parting to get the dia down for the ferrule, and the same to finish parting off but that was partly because the chuck was flying a bit close to the knuckles. Miles to go yet, but at least I can now think to use a skew rather than run from it, and the finish off the blade is very good. Final was a bit of Abranet to 400 grit, then a wipe with boiled linseed. The chisel needs tuning now but that's hand-tools isn't it! (it's an 1880 Mathieson from Glasgow, nice.)
Will attempt some more ambitious items as the days and weeks go by. Thanks, Duncan!

nice lines and a super looking finish; both clean and complementary - I can see you are going to really enjoy this tool.

much better to extend yourself on the practice pieces, and undertake the steps you feel confident about with the skew at this stage; the wider confidence will come really quickly with use.
