Files aren't the easiest things to store. It's not a good idea to have them loose in a drawer or box, with their hardened surfaces knocking against each other, so most of mine hang from a rack, which is just a piece of ply with some deep slots in it.
But the rack is too small for some big rasps and hand files which can be about 18" long, including the handle, so I knocked up this little storage box the other day.
It's a simple frame of scrap wood containing eight offcuts of plastic waste pipe. (I can't be the only one here who has most of a 3m length waiting to come in useful...)
In my case it hangs below the saw till, in what was one of the few remaining spaces. The far end is just left open - the files are heavy enough to stay put. If the pipe doesn't wedge tidily, a few dabs of hot melt glue will keep it in place.

I had to laugh when I opened the thread and saw the phots: I'd just been fiddling about with and cursing a couple of large, hard backed files (as in filing documents) which are sods to store due to their wedge shape. So I thought, "What a happy coincidence. AndyT has obviously come up with some sort of cunning bit of shelving for such things."

That said, the tubes are a nice idea, the only alternative presumably being to build a box. Paring chisels seem also to be a bit too big to fit in with everything else.
