you probably want the big brother 351 or 352 , those are generally either 750w or 1kw and are easily changed or upgraded to more power - lots on come up on ebay but they sure as hell arent cheap

Hi Steve,

I have a 301 I bought s/hand a few years ago. OK for general cutting and very solid. It does lack power and struggles to rip green wood 6" deep.

One problem with mine is that although the fence itself is a solid lump of steel the angle to which it attaches is less so. Mine is bent, don't know how or why. However, freehand I can cut a pretty good straight line.

The table tilt adjustment is a bit primitive too. There are no screw adjusters for table or fence its a case of slacken the bolts and tap until it moves to the right spot.

The max depth of cut is 6" but if you turn the top guides 90 degrees you can get nearly 7". I wouldn't pay £450 for one. Anyone have an opinion on a Startrite 352e at £782 from Hallvalue? http://www.poolewood.co.uk/acatalog/Sta ... ndsaw.html

Hope this is of some use.

Graham

Looking at that link there are a few tools on the table, anyone know what they are?

I have this saw, am I missing something useful?

Moose,

this is a new not secondhand saw, 2hp in either single or three phase. Its not the same as the 352SB (which is 3 times the price new) also available on their site. They also have a 502e 2.5hp single or three phase but with 350mm depth and 465mm width of cut, £977 inc VAT. The specs say 1 or 3 phase for both but I am a bit confused as they don't have a box to choose 1 or 3 phase when ordering.

I am not likely to buy one anytime soon but was curious to know the difference between e and sb as I saw someone recently paid about that much for a used 352 (don't know what spec/model) on Ebay.

ahh okay , i dont know anything about the new ones tho someone, bob ? did tell me they arent as well made as the old ones - which is one reason why prices on ebay sometimes exceed new

the other reason being ebay syndrome - i watched a 3ph 351 go for over 900 the other day which is just bonkers (not to merntion the muppet who had listed a bas 315 as a startrite 351 and tried to tell me they were the same when i called him on it   )

over on the general woodwork board matty is selling a 240v 352 for 340 notes - i'm very tempted but dont have the cash and also hes in leeds - but i thought i would mention it in case you were

If you ask Mattty nicely, he might be able to bolt that saw on to a strong pallet, so it could easily be collected and loaded by a courier (try using Shilply.com for quotes). When I got my 401E several weeks ago, it only cost £40 to have it shipped down from 'Oop North'. 8)

i did think of that but we are saving for a house deposit and i dont have 340 quid spare - plus its a big old unit which i cant really fit in my 'shop

Hi Moose,
thanks for letting me know about Matty's 352. Sadly I can't afford it at the moment but I think it was sold on Saturday anyway so that will stop me agonising about missing a bargain!

I'm just going to have to follow Mathias Wandel and make myself a big one next year when I hope to have time and money. It doesn't have to be fancy just capable of ripping green half logs because I want to try converting and drying some timber myself. After looking at the build your own bandsaw posts I googled the subject and found quite a few people have built their own.

Thanks again

Graham

PS I love my Sealey pillar drill more than ever now it's been sniped at by the tool connoisseurs
