Having purchased the filters and extractor fan I am now ready to start building the booth. The one thing I am trying to understand is whether the pleated dust filters that I purchased need to be mounted a certain distance behind the andrea primary filters or whether then can be mounted directly behind?

I would have assumed that the pleated dust filters would ideally be mounted some distance behind so that the spray is actually dry before it hits these filters so as to avoid them getting wet and clogging up?

How did you overcome the 3 phase problem of the fan?

As I'm going through the same process (but considering how essential an explosion proof fan really is - as I have other flames/spark producing devices e.g light switches in the proposed spray area) I look forward to your progress reports.

I didn't. The 3 phase fan is in the garage and will go on ebay at the weekend. I watched one on there this week and it went for over a £100, so I am hoping a flameproof one will do quite well.

I got my hands on a 600mm extractor fan on ebay for £90. It is large and I am worried that rather than just reducing over spray it will just suck all the paint away from the gun and the work piece will stay paint free :?

In answer to your point. Given I have the andrea filter, the pleated filter as well and I am spraying water based paint I am not worrying about an explosion. If I was spraying 2 pac then I might look into it further

Aahh, that makes sense.

600mm !! Perhaps you can sell your turbine also - then just connect your spraygun to the fan's outlet ! :D

Hi

In my experience the paint mist will be dry dust by the time it gets through the Andreae filter and mesh - I ended up wedging the secondary filter where it fitted the taper of the fan box, which was about 3" behind the Andreae filter. Given the tapering shape of the fan box, the further back the secondary filters are, the smaller surface area they would have, which I reckoned would reduce efficiency, so I picked filters to best match the size of opening.

Cheers

HI there Flanajb
was just looing for spray booth fans on net do you still have 3 phase one or did it go on ebay?
I'd be interested if you still have it.
Tom

Overspray mist/dust drying 'time' will be dependant on ambient temp/paint type and distance from gun to filter etc etc - so a tad variable. Any way you can do a trial run or two so you can observe the airflow in the booth and then adjust your filters to suit?
