So as not to take any other stanley related thread off on a tangent, and apologies if this has been asked a million times before.

Is there any way of determining the age of a plane if it is made in the US or GB? I've got a Stanley 5 1/2 (iron width 2 3/8"), stamped 'Made in USA' behind the knob.
Looking at pictures of other 5 1/2 planes, mine doesn't have the rasied ridges behind the tote, why is that?

thanks

Yes there is the Stanley Bench Plane Dating page

Have fun,
Jasper (whose planes are older than his grandfather)

Thanks Jasper and Alf.

That link looks good. I'll check out my plane when I get home. Thing is, not a lot of it is standard. The knob and tote were very battered, so have been swapped for Crown replacements. Swapped the iron and cap iron for Hock replacements. So all that is original is the body assembly and the lever cap, it'll still be interesting to know there age.
