I can't remember seeing this before but maybe I'm getting forgetful!

Have a look at the photo of the plane iron cap. It says "correct angle for grinding" with an arrow pointing to the shaped cut-out to test the iron against.

Have you come across this before?

Looks like a Marples cap iron to me, don't recall seeing that on any Stanleys.

Old Records have the engraved marking showing angle but not the 'ear'.

At least in my limited experience anyhow!
 
Marples cap. I've never seen one like that on a stanley. Stanley wrote their sharpening instructions on the packaging for at least some of the irons.
