Stanley Bailey no. 4

On my way to work I visited the regular market/boot sale which is just a minute away from my office and saw, but didn't buy, a USA made Stanley Bailey No. 4 plane with the No. 4 behind the front knob and US PAT APR 19 10 in front of the rear handle. There is one currently on Ebay with the No. 4 cast either side of the front knob.
Does the position of the No. 4 tell us anything about the plane's age?

Without looking on the blood and gore, I would say approx 1910 -1925

Will be a good one whatever, I would buy it if condition is OK. Not any real difference in price between any of the later types that I have seen,

Thanks. It looks like it's a Type 11 dated 1910-1918.

Do you remember if it had a squat front knob or a tall one?

It sounds like 1925 to 1928 Type 14 according to info Rex Mill

I can't be certain but I think it was a tall knob.

It doesn't seem (to me) to be a Type 14 because it had "Bailey" cast in front of the front knob instead of "Made in the USA". The "No." was cast on one side behind the front knob and "4" on the other side behind the front knob. There was a single patent date behind the frog.

The photograph of the No 13 on the Rex Mill site seems to fit the bill.

Type 13 states that the patent date you mentioned is now behind the frog (in front of rear handle as you say). Made in the USA came on the Type 14 as is my #5. It was only there on the type 14's between 1929 and 1931 after which it was moved behind the frog. All info from Rex Mill. Did you buy it????? How much did the guy want for it?

No, I didn't buy it or ask how much he wanted. I already have a problem finding my bench.

I will see if he's there at next Thursday's boot sale.

If they are cheap I buy them fettle them and sell them on here, there are loads on new wood workers who need a good plane at a reasonable price.
