I wish to remove the main handle from a 803 hand drill.
I see there is a pin to knock out, does the handle then just pull out, releasing the top pinion, or does it screw out on a thread?
Once the frame is repainted, will the handle reassemble tightly?
Or should I mask up the handle, and leave well alone?

Thanks
Bod

Hi Bod. I've not had the main handle off one of those. In the Record equivalent (the No.123) the handle just screws off, but that's no help to you.

Unless you can afford a botch-up, or it's already loose and needs tightening, I think you're better to mask up the handle and leave well enough alone.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Cheers, Vann.

I know these are very common, of all the ones I have seen at carboots etc. I've seen rusty, seized, missing chucks, side handles, even main gear wheels, but never thinking about it, missing or broken main handles.
I think I will have to find a real dogs dinner of one and learn how they are made, before disturbing this one, which is on the whole almost new, except the frame paint.

I assume you mean the largest handle by "main handle". I've just wrecked one for you. The piece it fits on is cylindrical with a lug about 20mm in length down each side. If you wished to re use a handle, you'd probably need to try to remove it by pulling without twisting. Having said that it would be an easy job to replace it. I can't see how that pin holds the pinion unless it is an interference fit when pressed together.
I wouldn't bother with it - they're cheap enough if you look around. I've just unpacked a box of tools and found five - I've got more somewhere! I've never paid more than two quid.

Thanks for your sacrifice, I visualise the large wooden handle is fitted in similar way to some of the clear handled screwdrivers.
The pin I expect holds the rod which at the top end has the handle, and the bottom end is the pinion axle.
Yes they are cheap, at carboots there never more than a pound or two for complete working examples. Or you see them for several weeks, till the seller gets the message.

No. I don't possess a camera. :D . It's exactly as Bod says - if you look at a translucent screwdriver handle, that's what it's like. The flat lugs on the sides stop the handle twisting.

Okay, I understand now. Thanks.

Cheers, Vann.
