Hi.

My nephew has just informed me that he has acquired a wooden plane about 2 foot long with the inscription
A STANDLEY on it, can anyone tell me anything about this please.

I`ll try and get some more info about it when I get to have a look at it but he says definitely A STANDLEY, I`m now wondering
if it`s a home made one and it`s the makers name.

Could it not be the owner's name? - it was pretty common for an owner to inscribe his name on a wooden plane.

Almost certainly the owner's name. There might be a maker's name as well but at 24 inches long it's probably a try plane which was a very common and useful item. Sadly under appreciated by many.

I would assume that was the case... or if the imprint is particularly clear and well presented, a makers stamp.

A photo, as clear as possible, of the stamp would be helpful.
