Had a go at a square plater great fun !! Just have to remember the corners.
I have also made a thin plater in green Horse chestnut lovely movement in the rim.

Both platters are great. I'm not so keen on the mills, but I think it's the wood rather than the shape etc. On the square platter, did you find that the corners flexed a lot when cutting, such that you had ripples to sand out near the edges?

Maybe it's the thinness, but I've found anything less than ~3mm thick that is not complete in the round (i.e. corners of square platters, edges of rectangular boards) flexes when it meets the cutting edge. The ripples then have to be hand sanded out off the lathe, which is a bit of a pain.

Try running the lathe at it's slowest speed (unles it's something like 10 rpm :lol: ) and make sure you press gently.

Like the form of the H-Chestnut one from what I can see would like a shot showing more of the top surface.

That's Great, the wood speaks, I always look at similar figuring and smugly say to myself 'I'm responsible for showing that to the world' .
