I had another little play today. I'm not sure what the wood is but its really heavy. I managed not to injure myself turning the square bit but then I cunningly stabbed my hand with a chisel taking the last little bit off after finishing the base

Sorry for the rubbish pictures. Comments appreciated

cheers JT

WOW jt these turnings just get better and better, not sure how many more different unique designs there are left in the turning world, but seem to be fully equiped with them..

Nice bowl, love the way you've managed to get a burnt groove into the rim as decoration as well :D
Not sure about the timber, although it's very open-grained,quite like sapele, but the figuring looks better.

Probably shouldn't laugh at your misfortune, but I did anyway..

Nice work JT. What speed did you run the lathe at. I did my first winged turning last week and felt a little uncomfortable to start with but soon settled down. Lump of wood (field ash) was 14" * 7" * 3" thick. Managed a speed of about 850 rpm. When finished I will put a post up (First Winged Stool). I like the finish you have done and the grain shows well. All the best.

Really nice job JT.

I enjoy turning these - although sometimes my fingers don't really share the fun!

The only minor comment (in a constructive spirit) is that the base / sides transition is a little severe for me. You may be mirroring the round / square nature of the main bowl in its profile but I would tend to round off the side to base in a smooth curve. This results in a shadow cast so you can't really see where the base touches the surface it is on and gives an impression of lightness and grace to the item.

Anyway, I had really intended the post to be congratulatory as it is a really nice item so well done!

Simon.

A very nice piece Johnny.

From the top view i can`t fault it, though personally i`d have preferred a convex base rather than the concave one, only a personal thing i`m sure.

Well turned & finished as usual.

Thanks for the replies everyone :D

Malcolm, I think I had my lathe running a bit quicker than 850, probably more 1500ish with very light cuts on the square so as not to chip on the edges.

Simon, I see what you mean but it seemed wrong to round the bottom off, I liked the funnel shape as it is. Maybe if I had done a straight cut in a mm or two on the base to give the shadow at the bottom? A thought for the next one though :D

No one any idea on what the timber is?

Cheers JT

Very nice square bowl.
The wood is Santos Mahogany.
I have use this wood many times and I'm able to recognize it on sight, very heavy and dense wood and a distinctive sweet? smell when cutting (turning).
This wood is closed grained and with its natural oils polishes well with moderate sanding.

Turning square bowl is not for everyone, I've made over 200 square bowls in the past 3 years.
The dangers related to square turning are numerous, using the correct safety measures are key elements in making wonderful artwork.

Hi Mark,

How about putting some pictures of your work up. Some of the things I have seen of yours are worth sharing here for inspiration.

Another very nice and unusual looking piece JT :D
I think though that the underside lets the overall shape down, looking at it from the side.
I think it would have been better in a rounded bowl shape :?:
Lovely wood too :D

I really liked the funnel shape, especially with the grain pattern, the whole design is kinda based round the shape.

You're a hard man to please Paul  I may well make one in the more usual style from this timber for a comparison.

Cheers JT

Hi Pete,

I have posted a few bowls recently.
I've been so busy with work right now it's hard to find the time to complete the several bowl I currently have in my shop.
I will post a few new ones in the next few weeks.
