Does anyone know where I can source some sprung pin type hinges as the picture here. I am not sure if these are sprung or not but I am looking for sprung ones that pop into the receiving ferule like a watch strap. Thank Geoff

This is what I was looking for in metal. These Hafele ones are plastic I think.

Giff,
did you manage to ever find such a hinge?

The missus has asked me to build her a bathroom cabinet with mirror doors and I plan on bonding the mirror to 12mm board and then using a similar type of hinge to the ones you've described in Stainless Steel. Can't find anything on Hafele site.

I had a thought about this - you might get away without using the springs:

  1. Take the brass and steel set described earlier. As long as the pin is loose in both brass sockets...
  2. ... carefully cut off the blind end of one of the sockets and make sure the pin slides easily through it completely.
  3. When drilling for the socket, do one to be deeper, by the amount the pin projects when it's in the right place.
  4. Install as per diagram, but with the pin dropped into the empty space (can't misalign as it can't drop far enough).
  5. Invert or use a strong magnet through the carcase to pull the pin into the right position. Stop it dropping back with a small screw across the hole, just below the socket.

If you can put any shelves in afterwards (you usually can) there's no reason why the screw couldn't go into the edge of the door, thus staying invisible (you'd have to be able to push the door inwards to get at it, or have a fiddly cranked- or stubby- screwdriver to do it up).

Might work, but I'd experiment, I think, to see if it's do-able. If it works, you have the added advantage of being able to remove the door later if you ever need to.

E.
