If I made a cap iron for my (No.65?) Spokeshave that works like a chip breaker out of brass, what is the minimum thickness I should really be using to have it perform well? In the "Working with Handplanes" book, the spokeshave tune-up article recommends making one out of 1/4" stock, yet the thickest I can find on ebay is 4mm, anything thicker and I'd have to track down a source. Would 4mm (0.16") do the job adequately enough as not just a cap iron but also a chip breaker?
