I'm enjoying the power and lack of vibration with the new lathe, its making turning even more enjoyable  Made this form this afternoon from spalted sycamore. The timber is really punky and takes a bit of finishing but the colours are so nice I think its worth persevering. The lid is Sycamore coloured with acrylic and the carved finial is Sycamore too. Everything is finished with acrylic laquer. It stands around 11" with the finial.

Comments and critique most welcome.

Very nice JT. Tho not keen on the finial. Reminds me of Thundercats, or Quake

I presume that the finial is a characterised 'J'? Now you need to do a second one and have a finial that's a 'T' and sell them as a pair.

Love the form. (And envy you the lathe. )

Another winner for me Johnny :D
Great form and great piece of timber.
If the lid is a 'J' then that could be another good idea :D

Johnny, excellent hollow form, this kind of finials are not my direct choice,
my thingy are knobs, but I respect your choice.
As I suppose hollowing rig work.

Why didn't you like Thundercats Tom?

Pete,Paul yes it is a J,the form looked kind of ancient to me with the colour and spalting so I tried to make the J like a bone on a tusk.

Thanks Steve,glad you like it.

Ad,the finial was just a bit of fun really but I do think its come out rather effective more so than I thought it would. Yes it was hollowed with the rig, its great fun to use except when the laser moves slightly  I need to do a few modifications to it

johnny, I don't think I've seen anyone in recent years climb the learning curve so steeply in the variety and quality of your output , your ability to fit the 'production' in whilst still earning a living shows an energy most of us can only aspire to.

Thanks Chas  The thing is I can't stop turning , I get an idea in my head and it has to come out  I was out in the workshop until 10 the other night much to swmbos disgust  She likes it when the galleries pay though

Those words said by someone involved with a project for mainly pleasure an self satisfaction are the sign of a person near the pinnacle of contentment.

I often don't get out into the workshop until 8:30 in the evening. If I came back in by 10pm I would never get anything done ;) Normally my wife gives me a call at about 11pm so that I can finish up, get back in and get cleaned up before midnight. Ready to be woken up by the kids at 6:30
